“People aren’t willing to spend more money to have better security in the consumer space.” — Joseph Steinberg

In this podcast, IBM Executive Security Advisor Diana Kelley talks with cybersecurity thought leader and SecureMySocial CEO Joseph Steinberg about the many challenges associated with securing the Internet of Things (IoT), particularly when it comes to consumer goods such as smart refrigerators and connected cars.

Taking a unique stance on a much discussed issue, Steinberg highlights the connection between evolutionary biology and technology development, noting that devices like smartphones, smart cameras and smart cars are all actually computers — even if we often don’t take the same security precautions we take with our desktops and PCs.

Although Steinberg and Kelley agree that security concerns are indeed plentiful when it comes to the IoT, they conclude the podcast with recommendations for improving IoT security — including segmenting networks and covering cameras — and moving toward a future of secure and widespread IoT adoption in both the consumer and enterprise realms.
