Recall the top cases of cyber attacks this year and what to expect next year.

December 20, 2018 - Sean Bradley - PC Advisor (UK), with Writing.

The theme cybersecurity has gained prominence in the news in recent months. The year 2018 that says so.
The year was marked by several cases of major proportions and strong trends, such as cryptojacking and ransomware.
Panda Labs has compiled an annual cybersecurity report, gathering data to analyze trends and make predictions for 2019. Insights can help companies and consumers prepare for the cyber threats they are likely to face in the coming years.

What bombed in 2018

This year was busy in the cyber security area. Several major cases have occurred, starting with the Meltdown and Specter vulnerabilities found in most modern microprocessors, as well as backdoors being discovered on systems used by UK government companies.
The rise of cryptojacking has also been seen, involving the process of remotely using someone's CPU or graphics card for cryptocurrency mining. This can be done subtly: As you visit a particular site, the code uses the processing power of your machine to solve the algorithms used in cryptocurrency mining and then places the reward on the hacker's account.
In addition to the most direct threats & #8220; As for malware, there were also a large amount of data breaches over the year, which became even more costly with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe. Under the new law, companies that mishandle user data could be fined millions of euros, or 2% or 4% annual revenues.
The best-documented data misuse case of the year involved the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which personal data from at least 87 million Facebook users were exploited without permission to influence the US presidential election.
In September, nearly 50 million Facebook accounts were exposed after attackers exploited a vulnerability that allowed them to steal access tokens. Facebook has notified the Data Protection Commission (DPC) in Ireland of the fact, but it is not yet known if there will be a fine for this particular event.
The biggest data breach of the year came from Aadhaar, India's national identification database, which contains the information of 1.1 billion Indian citizens, including biometric data. Journalists found that they could obtain any record of an Aadhaar-registered individual for 500 rupees (just under R$ 26). The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has denied any allegation of violation.

Trends for 2019

In 2019, there will be an increase in the pace of the cyber war arms race. While conventional malware such as Worms and Trojans remain a threat, several new methods of software infiltration will become much more common.
Still, live hacking & #8221; It will become more popular because attacks originating in this way do not require traditional software packages that can be detected or destroyed. Instead, a system is actively hacked into a hacker to retrieve information or data. This is unlikely to directly affect consumers as it will be more corporate or government oriented & #8211; but it can also have repercussions for the general public.
Supply chain attacks will also become more common. This idea is based on a popular service being infected with malware, unknown by the software vendor and then distributed to a customer base & #8211; essentially using legitimate software as a cover for malware to infect a large user base under the guise of a new update or newer version.
Artificial intelligence will also be used more by hackers. 2019 is expected to be AI's year in different ways, which will be used across industries for both positive and negative effects. Because technology is not yet best practice, it can be used by criminals to find new ways to break down defenses.
