The race towards digital transformation is putting sensitive data at risk in organizations around the world, according to the Thales Data Threat Report with IDC research and analysis. The survey indicates that as organizations adopt new technologies such as multi-cloud deployments, they struggle to implement adequate data security.
Among respondents, 97% reported that their organizations had already had some level of digital transformation underway, thereby confirming that they are using and exposing sensitive data in these environments. Companies that are more adept at digital transformation are at greater risk of having their data breached, but the most alarming finding is that less than a third of respondents (30% only) are using encryption in these environments. The study also found some key areas in which adoption and use of encryption are above average: Internet of Things (IoT), containers (47%), and big data (45%).
Cloud risk
As companies migrate to cloud or multi-cloud environments as part of their digital transformation journey, it is becoming increasingly complex to protect their sensitive data. Nine out of ten respondents use, or will use, some type of cloud environment, and 44% considered the complexity of this environment as a barrier to the implementation of appropriate data security measures. In fact, this complexity is ahead of staff needs, budget constraints, and ensuring organizational support.
Lack of protection?
Globally, 60% organizations say they have experienced some violation at some point in their history, with 30% having gone through it just last year. At a time when violations regularly appear in the headlines, it was in the United States that the highest number of violations occurred in the last three years (65%) and in 2018 (36%).
What is important is that whatever technologies an organization deploys to effect digital transformation, easy and timely access to data puts them at risk internally and externally. Most organizations (86%) feel vulnerable to data breach threats. Unfortunately, this does not always translate into security best practices, as evidenced by less than 30% respondents using encryption as part of their digital transformation strategy.
